India and Russia have agreed to develop the advanced version of the BrahMos cruise missile to be produced by New Delhi-based joint venture of the two governments.

The new BrahMos-2 cruise missile, with the Mach-5 speed (five times faster than sound) would be able to pierce through any present and future air defence system of the adversary and incorporates some of the cutting-edge military technologies.

More than 20 Russian plants and design bureaus, including the leading Russian missile producers Strela and Mashinostroyeniye research and production association, will be involved in the production of the new weapon, RIA Novosti agency reported.

Due to its versatility, BrahMos missile can be based on mobile launchers, ships, submarines and aircraft.

India and Russia had set up BrahMos Aerospace joint venture to develop, produce and globally market the anti-ship cruise missile based on Russia's 'Yakhont' project.

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniye missile plant had pooled their efforts in 1998 to develop the BrahMos cruise missile christened after Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers of the two countries famous for their ferocity and grace.

Since induction of first BrahMos-1 missiles by the Indian Navy in 2006, the Indian Army has also started the mobile version of the cruise missiles and the development of air version of the cruise missiles is in the final stages for the Sukhoi Su-30MKI platforms.

The BrahMos-1 has a range of 290 kilometres, and cruise speed of 920 meters per second (Mach-3), and carries up to 300-kilogram warhead.
